China Golden Week 2026: Two Different Octobers

Kelvin Zhao

October is a good time to visit China. For an easier sightseeing trip, I would start from 12 October, allowing for the holiday and people extending their leave.

I booked Chongqing for early October because everyone recommended the month. October was the good month. Everyone said so, and nobody mentioned that the whole country had the same week off.

China’s National Day holiday runs from 1 to 7 October 2026. Trains sell out, hotels get ideas about their own importance, and the famous sights draw crowds.

Across six cities, WenToGo scores that week between 53 and 59 out of 100. Move the trip to 12 to 18 October and every score rises to at least 76. Same cities, same autumn, much less holiday pressure.

When is China Golden Week in 2026?

The official holiday is Thursday 1 October to Wednesday 7 October. Sunday 20 September and Saturday 10 October become working days to make up for the extended break. The State Council confirmed these dates in November 2025.

The travel rush need not stop at the official dates. Mid-Autumn Festival runs from 25 to 27 September, and annual leave can connect the gaps:

  • Take 28 to 30 September off: a 13-day break from 25 September to 7 October.
  • Take 8 to 10 October off, including the working Saturday: an 11-day break from 1 to 11 October.
  • Take both: 17 days off, from 25 September to 11 October.

Those are possible leave arrangements, not 17 days of nationwide closure. Still, I would allow for spillover on either side rather than expect the queues to disappear on 8 October.

For a sense of scale, official figures recorded 765 million domestic tourist trips during the seven-day National Day holiday in 2024. The pressure extends well beyond Beijing.

Two seven-day trips, compared

Destination 1 to 7 Oct 12 to 18 Oct Better by
Beijing in October 53 76 23 points
Shanghai in October 58 80 22 points
Xi’an in October 55 77 22 points
Chongqing in October 57 80 23 points
Hangzhou in October 59 82 23 points
Qingdao in October 53 82 29 points

The scores combine weather, comfort, crowd pressure and price pressure. Both trips last seven days. These are modelled conditions, not live hotel prices or a forecast of how quickly the crowds will thin out.

Chongqing is the one I paid for. Its weather score is 85 in both windows, yet the trip rises from 57 to 80. The crowd score moves from 35 to 66 and the price score from 45 to 66. Better dates, without needing better weather.

Why monthly advice misses this

A monthly guide turns thirty-one days into one sentence: mild, comfortable, good for sightseeing. That can describe the weather during Golden Week perfectly while telling you nothing about the queue outside.

Changing cities only gets you so far. All six above share the same national holiday, though the pressure varies. A quieter city may help. Quieter dates make the bigger difference in these comparisons.

Should you avoid Golden Week?

For an easy sightseeing trip with flexible dates, yes. I would start from 12 October, after the weekend that people can add with annual leave.

If the holiday atmosphere is part of the appeal, there is a reason to stay. Just plan for the crowds and higher demand. A festival can be memorable and inconvenient at the same time.

If your dates cannot move

Book accommodation early and check when your trains and must-see attractions release tickets. China Railway’s advance sales window is 15 days, including the travel day, so set a reminder for your train’s release time.

Use fewer bases. An ambitious six-city route becomes a tour of very busy stations, with less room to recover if a connection sells out.

Keep the famous thing you came for. If the Forbidden City or the Terracotta Army is the point of the trip, book it when reservations open and plan around it. Balance it with parks, neighbourhoods and food stops that leave room to change your mind.

If part of the trip can move to 12 October or later, put your busiest sightseeing days there.

What I would do

I would choose 12 to 18 October 2026 for a first sightseeing trip, then check the China travel timing guide and the October page for each stop before booking.

China in October can be excellent. Just remember that October is two different months, and book the one you actually wanted.

Method and sources

WenToGo scores dates using structured research on weather, comfort, crowds, prices, public holidays and destination events. The comparisons above use the website-data snapshot dated 5 August 2026. The scores were checked against the trip engine on 11 September 2026. Both windows are seven days.

The scores include the official holidays but do not separately estimate demand from people extending their leave. Starting on 12 October is my allowance for that spillover, not a prediction that crowds or prices return to normal overnight.
